VAIL, Colo. - Jan. 21, 2015 - PRLog -- Drinking over the holidays is a tradition followed by many, from toasts at holiday parties to sixers with the boys over a football game.  Research shows (http://www.mdpi.com/2072-6643/2/8/781)that as athletes, up to 5% of our daily calories come from booze.  A new study (http://psycnet.apa.org/?&fa=main.doiLanding&doi=10.1037/hea0000157) also shows that we tend to drink more on days when we exercise.  The authors suggested that we drink more after exercise for a few potential reasons:

Perhaps people reward themselves for working out by having more to drink or maybe being physically active leads them to encountering more social situations where alcohol is consumed

To motivate us not to drink what follows are 5 reasons why drinking and fitness are not good bedfellows.

#5 Alcohol Reduces Muscle Growth (Protein Synthesis)

We lift weights or train to gain or maintain muscle.  Science now shows (http://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journ...) that the building of new muscle can be reduced by as much as 37% by drinking alcohol, 1.5 g/kg of body weight, roughly 10 beers.

#4 Alcohol Is A Diuretic And Dehydrates The Body

Hydration is important for a healthy body and a focused and fruitful workout. For every gram of alcohol we drink we pee out an extra 10 ml of urine.  So for every beer you drink, you will pee out more than half of a cup.

#3 Reduced Power

Power is important, especially if we are trying to progress in our sport.  Following moderate ingestion of alcohol, about a six-pack of beer, research shows (http://www.jsams.org/article/S1440-2440%2809%2900003-6/ab...) that our power can decrease by as much as 40%.

#2 Injuries Are More Likely

We love to exercise and injuries are unfortunately common and prevent us from our beloved workouts.  It turns out that (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/10840864) even after minimal alcohol consumption we have a risk of injury near 55% compared to a 24% injury rate for the abstainers.

#1 Reduction Of Overall Athletic Performance

Overall athletic performance (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3257708/) can decline by as much as 11.4% in athletes (http://www.teamusa.org/~/media/TeamUSA/sport%20performance/coaching/Newsletter/August%2013/Alcohol%20and%20the%20Athlete.pdf)having consumed alcohol in the days before an activity.  Are beers really worth a 11 percent decline in performance?
