Follow on Google News | Sudden Cardiac Arrest Survivor Gives the Gift of Life to Club for SeniorsParise’s SCA event took place during a game of pickleball at the Pavilion Gymnasium in Bathurst, New Brunswick, when he suddenly collapsed just moments after his heart began beating irregularly. Retired nurses Claire Johnstone and Cecile Cormier immediately began CPR on him while Lorne Guidrey retrieved the HeartSine automated external defibrillator (AED) in the City Hall building next door. Using the AED, Guidrey then administered two shocks to Parise’s heart, bringing him back to life. Through HeartSine’s Forward Hearts program, Parise is donating a HeartSine samaritan public access defibrillator to the Club D’age D’or in Petit Rocher, an organization that promotes the well-being and defense of rights for those 50 and over. The defibrillator is courtesy of HeartSine and Rescue 7, an exclusive Canadian distributor of HeartSine products which installed the samaritan defibrillator that saved Parise’s life. HeartSine’s Forward Hearts program lets survivors of an SCA event, in which a HeartSine defibrillator has been used, to potentially save another life by donating a HeartSine samaritan PAD to the organization of the survivor’s choice. The donation of a HeartSine defibrillator through the Forward Hearts program extends this lifesaving technology to even more people, offering many a better chance of survival in the case of sudden cardiac arrest. Parise says he is recovering well and is deeply thankful to his rescuers and the HeartSine defibrillator for saving his life. He is enjoying life to the fullest and feels that every day is a gift. About SCA Sudden Cardiac Arrest happens to people of all ages, including children. It is a condition in which the heart suddenly and unexpectedly stops beating, causing blood to stop flowing to the brain and other vital organs. SCA usually causes death if it's not treated within minutes. CPR alone will not restart the heart, so the American Heart Association and ERC recommend CPR combined with early defibrillation (within three to five minutes) for the best outcome. SCA claims more than seven million lives annually. It occurs abruptly and without warning, with 84 percent of SCA events occurring outside of the healthcare setting.
