A recent study conducted in Sweden compared the effect a normal mirror and The Skinny Mirror has on female perception, attitude, and body image.

The experiment consisted of 86 women. Half of the participants were exposed to The Skinny Mirror while the other half were exposed to a normal mirror. All participants were required to answer the same questionnaire (click here for questionnaire (http://theskinnymirrors.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/Study2014-PAGE40.pdf)) and were subjects of the same observation, regardless of which mirror they had been exposed to. Using Swami’s “Photographic Figure Rating Scale” (http://theskinnymirrors.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/SwamisPhotographicFigureScale.pdf) which is based on average Body Mass Index calculations, respondents were asked to select the image that most represents both their current and ideal body. The gap between the chosen figures constitutes body-discrepancy (a measure of body dissatisfaction) and body size distortion (the gap between “believed” body size and “actual” body size).

Survey results conclude that women who had been exposed to The Skinny Mirror experienced less body-discrepancy between their perceived “actual” and perceived “ideal” body, compared to women who had been exposed to a normal mirror. The results also revealed that The Skinny Mirror does not lead to body size distortion because most women believe they are 2-3 sizes larger than they really are. Other findings showed that the women who were exposed to The Skinny Mirror felt significantly more comfortable with their body and had a more positive attitude towards their bodies.

“Every reflection we see in a mirror is an illusion. What most people don’t realize is we actually look heavier in a normal mirror because we are looking at a flat 2 dimensional image, just like in a photo or on TV. The Skinny Mirror is intended to help users feel more positive about themselves by seeing a slightly slimmer reflection, which in turn gives them the extra boost in confidence and self-esteem to accomplish their goals.” states Belinda Jasmine, Founder of The Skinny Mirror.

“The Skinny Mirror’s slimming reflection is a great way to start your New Year’s Resolution.” Says Michael Bertzfield, Director of Operations. “It’s a new tool that helps build inner-confidence to believe in yourself.”
