Charles or Charley to those close to him was the eldest son of Kennerly, an American cowboy and Eliza, a Cherokee Indian and was raised in a farm in Red River in Bonham near Northeast Texas. The book chronicles his life story from the late 1800’s when he was a young boy in a Texan farm to mid 1950’s when he became a great grandfather in McAlester, Oklahoma. The book paints a moving real life story about a young man’s resolve dealing with the various tragedies life threw at him while also caring for his two siblings, younger brother David and sister Viola. This novel presents a fascinating look at vintage Americana and will fill your mind with nostalgia about a simpler life led in much simpler times.

A series of tragedy seems to follow Charley wherever he goes but his firm belief in God, his optimism and his desire to provide a good life for his family helps him overcome all such difficulties that followed him from his youth to old age. As a reader you will find it difficult to say goodbye to the characters once the last chapter comes to a close, like the difficulty you will face in accepting David’s and Viola’s moving away from Charley’s protection and care once they have all grown up. In this book you will get to see, realize and appreciate the hard toil the generations before had to undergo so that you and me could enjoy the spoils of their hard labour today. The importance of family in shaping up the character of an individual is another point that has been well explored in the novel. The real life photographs and an actual map of the period add credibility to the story and lets you connect with the incidents and characters that bit more. The consistency in the writing is of top quality and the tone and pace of the book has not been allowed to slip up even once.

Shirley is enjoying her retirement from Nursing, after 33 years.  She lives outside Sapulpa Oklahoma with her husband, three dogs and three cats. She thinks it's like having a house full of three year olds, there’s never a dull moment. At this time she has several publications on Amazon.
