Global Energy Chemicals and Oil Market from waste plastic - Recovery & Technologies - Recycled Plastics & Plastic Waste to Oil (Plastic Waste Products, Plastic Packaging Waste), Industry Analysis, Size, Share, Growth, Trends And Forecast, 2014 – 2020

Energy, chemicals, and oil are the various forms of energy, which are recovered from waste plastic. Some part of waste plastic is recycled and remaining is dumped into the ground, which means that energy worth millions of dollars is being dumped into the ground every day.

Waste producers are the end-users who use and discard plastics. Plastic waste is primarily produced from packaging, building and construction, automobiles, electronics, and agriculture industries. The waste-to-energy (WTE) market has great potential and is expected to record a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of near 10%. There are more than 800 WTE conversion sites all over the world. .

Price is the main criterion for any market. In the WTE market, the price of the end product is low and it is the main driver for the market. If the price of different energy materials is compared, the waste material (post processing) is the cheapest among all energy materials. With the ‘Go-Green’ initiative picking up pace, environmental concern has emerged as a key buying criterion. Plastic fuel has toxins, which may contaminate air and ground water sources. Thus, companies that use plastic fuel for heat generation should have proper incineration facility so that exhaust gases do not affect the environment. Lack of proper incineration facility is a major restraint for the market. In anaerobic degradation, plastic materials emit methane, which is responsible for global warming. Plastic fuel is environmental friendly, if used properly.

Quality is another important criterion. The plastic-derived fuel has high heat content (17,000-18,600 btu/lb) compared to other fuels such as coal and wood chips (refer table 1). Unprocessed plastic waste has inherent impurities that reduce the heat content of the fuel; processing enhances quality of the plastic fuel significantly.

Environmental concerns are paramount

Industrialization and growing population have led to various environmental issues such as global warming, increased carbon footprints, paucity of land, and water pollution. Moreover, high consumption lifestyle has increased the demand for plastic goods. However, major challenge is the decreasing land availability for dumping waste from the plastics industry currently, out of the global plastic waste, 21% is recycled, 16% is used for energy recovery, and the rest is land filled. However, plastic recycling and energy recovery are expected to increase, due to reducing capacity of landfills and environmental concerns associated with the landfills.

Growing geographies

The global WTE market is segmented into four major geographies - North America, Europe, Asia, and Rest of Asia (RoA). In 2014, the market is dominated by Europe with more than 40% share. North America is the fastest growing market. Currently most of the plastic waste produced in North America is exported to China. However, due to the new regulations imposed by the Chinese government, North America has to dispose its waste at its local facilities. In Asia, most of the market share comes from Japan due to its policies for waste management.
