Technology Meets Taste: California Olive Oil Ranch Implements Data for the Perfect Oil Blends

CHICO, Calif. - Dec. 23, 2014 - PRLog -- Chico, California (December 23, 2014) – This week, California Olive Oil Ranch (http://www.californiaoliveranch.com) represents California’s rich agricultural history on AOL’s editorial series This Built America (http://www.thisbuiltamerica.com/hawaii).

CEO Gregg Kelley and his team are big data fans. They scoured the world to learn the intricacies of cultivating the perfect olive—a fruit that has been grown throughout human history. They learned quite a bit, but mostly heard that farms operated in antiquated ways because history dictated it. That’s when the ranch’s data obsession came in—leading to changes that blend the rapid pace of technology with the methodical approach of agriculture. This has led to revelations it otherwise might have missed in the growing process.

Some changes Kelley’s team made included modifying its irrigation system to give fields the ample amount of moisture needed. “We also realized we were giving too much fertilizer to the trees,” Kelly notes. “We used to put too much nitrogen on them, treating them like an almond or walnut tree. We’ve reduced that to almost nothing and last year we didn’t use fertilizer.” That process nets the ranch thousands of pounds of fruit every 40 to 45 days in the fall.
