American Paper & Twine Co. Announces the 2014 Teacher of the Year

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Dec. 17, 2014 - PRLog -- Cleveland, TN Teacher is Awarded Teacher of the Year by American Paper & Twine, Titans Radio and Georgia-Pacific Communication Papers

American Paper & Twine Co., Titans Radio and Georgia-Pacific Communication Papers announced today that Sarah Garrett from Walker Valley High School in Cleveland, Tennessee, was selected as Teacher of the Year for the Tennessee Titans 2014 football season.

“For five years now, our sponsors at Georgia-Pacific Communication Papers and Titans Radio, have helped us to honor teachers across the state of Tennessee,” said Karen Doochin Shaffer, Vice President of American Paper and Twine Co. “During the Titans’ regular season, we review all of the entries to find exceptional teachers, and the weekly winners receive a commemorative plaque, a gift basket of school supplies, and tickets to a Tennessee Titans game.  At the end of the season we select a ‘Teacher of the Year’ from those weekly winners, and we are excited to have selected Mrs. Garrett as this year’s winner.”

“We are delighted to have an opportunity to reward tremendous teachers during the Titans’ season,” said Lonnie Spivak, e-Commerce and Marketing Manager. “Mrs. Garrett was one of the standouts early in the year, and we are extremely happy to present her with this award.” Mrs. Garrett’s award will be presented by the Tennessee Titans’ Executive Vice President, Don MacLachlan; David Morris, American Paper & Twine CFO; Karen Shaffer, American Paper & Twine Vice President; Lonnie Spivak, American Paper & Twine e-Commerce and Marketing Manager; and representatives from Georgia-Pacific Communication Papers. As the Teacher of the Year, Mrs. Garrett will be presented an award and a deluxe gift basket of school supplies at a live ceremony on the field during the December 28th Titans game vs. the Indianapolis Colts.

Sarah Garrett was the Teacher of the Week recipient for week three, and was nominated by her twin sister, Susan White. Susan said, “Mrs. Garrett is an outstanding educator. She sets a standard for excellence in her classroom that is a rare find in education today. She has always risen to the occasion and went above and beyond to develop lessons that keep the students engaged. Because of her diligence and continual evaluation of her curriculum, the EOC test scores for Freshman English at Walker Valley are among the highest in the entire state as well as the TVAAS scores for student improvement.”

Mrs. Garrett’s commitment to students shows both inside and outside the classroom. She was  recently awarded a Fund for Teacher Grant that she wrote in order to explore the lives of several of the authors of the books she teaches and she volunteered to attend an intensive English staff development over the summer.  Mrs. Garrett also serves as the sponsor for invisible children at Walker Valley, and volunteers as a tnAchieves mentor for seniors at Walker Valley.
