The Information Professional - The modern Private Investigator

Does the term Private investigator do a disservice to the industry and the work we all do?

LONDON - Dec. 10, 2014 - PRLog -- The term Private Investigator comes with a lot of baggage and ask someone what they think of when you say the term and they will most likely either tell you Sherlock Holmes or Magnum PI.

Whilst this may make it easy for companies to come up with a quick logo, man in deerstalker, large magnifying glass - if you've been looking around at private investigator websites then you will no doubt have seen a few - these easy to recognise historic signifiers of the private investigator, private eye or detective don't really communicate the work done today in the professional investigation industry.

I think sometimes they put off, or certainly confuse, clients who approach us as they don't understand the work we do,  the techniques we can employ and more, how we can help.

Yes we do sometimes have to follow people in the course of a surveillance investigation, and yes we sometimes have days when 'we feel too old for all this'. However technology has made a lot of what we do both easier to manage, less time involved and often cheaper for the client.

Whilst in the past Private Investigators were often retired police officers the widening scope and skill set of what is needed to be a modern investigator has meant that investigators now come from a much wider range of backgrounds - journalists, IT specialists and people who have gone out from day one with the aim to be a Private Investigator and have undertaken professional courses to gain the required skills and knowledge.

This, https://gothinkbig.co.uk/features/sherlock-how-to-be-a-private-investigator, from a selection of UK business' has some advice for would be private investigators.

One key thing all modern investigators need to be able to do is to keep up with technical developments. As technology has made our job easier it has also lead to problems for clients who have then in turn, come to us for help. For example we can now perform computer forensic analysis on phones, computers and other devices allowing us to recover evidence, even after it has been deleted. Also the fact that recording devices and 'bugs' are now easily available online and are much cheaper and easier to conceal then ever before has lead to us being able to offer 'bug sweeping' services to ensue the privacy of a home or an office.

The work we do on a daily basis can vary greatly, one day we might be compiling a details background report on a business and the next investigating suspected infidelity in someone's relationship.

The industry continues to change and develop but the two key parts of the job remain: information and people. We see ourselves as Information Professionals. we know how to find, gather and present the information our clients need.

We also believe that irrespective of whether we're dealing with a private or a corporate client it's our personal and caring approach that separates us from our competitors. Each and every member of our team has been selected on the basis of their professional ability of course, but also on the strength of their interpersonal skills and compassion.
