BOMA Georgia and HomeAid Atlanta hold successful Care Day at Covenant House Georgia

ATLANTA - Dec. 10, 2014 - PRLog -- The fourth BOMA Georgia-HomeAid Atlanta Care Day took place on Nov. 7 at Covenant House Georgia (CHG). Building Owners and Managers Association Georgia (BOMA Georgia) members and HomeAid Atlanta friends spent the day volunteering to complete major projects for this Atlanta facility serving homeless abandoned, abused, trafficked and exploited youth. During the morning’s kickoff, CHG’s Executive Director Allison Ashe shared information about the facility with event participants. Following Ashe’s remarks, Atlanta City Councilwoman Felicia Jones helped kick-off the event and presented BOMA with a proclamation from the city

Approximately 200 volunteers assisted CHG, representing over 80 BOMA Georgia companies. An extensive scope of work was completed at the center’s new location on Johnson Road on Atlanta’s west side. Work included parking lot paving & striping, electrical repair, building of a veranda, enclosing a green house, painting, tree trimming, floor care, large landscaping projects, pressure washing, organizing supply closets, sorting donated books, general clean up and more. BOMA Georgia’s member companies participated through sponsorships, securing supplies, and volunteering. The approximate value of the work performed is $130,000.

“On behalf of BOMA Georgia, we couldn't be more pleased with the outcome of this year's event,” said BOMA Georgia member Kacey Morris, who was the lead on the event’s core team. “With each project, we see an increase in participation, donations and overall enthusiasm from the BOMA Georgia Community. Our day at Covenant House was no exception. The greatest impact is being able to provide services and labor that CHG would otherwise be without, and also to be able to leave them with the contacts and information needed for future help.”

As November was National Homeless Youth Awareness Month, BOMA Georgia and HomeAid Atlanta hope this joint project brings more awareness to the plight of young people currently living on the streets. According to Safe Horizon—the largest organization helping victims of crime and abuse in the United States—5,000 young people die every year because of assault, illness, or suicide while on the street. A U.S. Department of Health and Human Services study found that 46 percent of homeless youth left their home because of physical abuse, while 17 percent left because of sexual abuse. The average age a teen becomes homeless is 14.7 years old.
