Detroit’s Power Blackout Uncovers America’s Decaying Power Grid

By: SmartProductSearch

DETROIT - Dec. 5, 2014 - PRLog -- A couple of days ago, the city of Detroit, Michigan was without power. Schools had to be dismissed early. There were people stuck in elevators and hospitals had to rely on emergency generators. All things electrical, including traffic lights were affected by the major outage that began mid-morning in the “Motor City”.

Approximately 900 students were in the Detroit Institute of Art at the time of the outage. The institutes employees were sent home for the day and all of the students were safely evacuated and transported to the uses without incident. Schools were also evacuated and students were safely transported to their homes due to the loss of power.

Elective surgeries were rescheduled, while traumas were diverted to Henry Ford and St. John hospital. Upon the onset of the outage, elevators and nonessential lighting and equipment was not used as a measure to preserve power obtained from back-up generators.

With no working traffic lights and various people trapped in powerless elevators, emergency response staff was extremely busy today. Many who currently work with officials at City Hall contend that the city knew that their grid system was not equipped to run unevolved long-term.

The current system has been in place since the 1980’s. Although the system is currently being phased out, the transition to the new DTE Energy grid came too late for current residents.

Fortunately, there are ways to produce energy using grass and organic material very cheaply without depending on solar panels or any power grid for pennies per month.

Renewable energy is energy that is generated from sunlight, rain, tides, geothermal heat and wind. These sources are naturally and constantly replenished, which is why they are deemed as renewable. The usage of renewable energy sources is very important when considering the sustainability of the existing energy usage of the world.

While there is currently an abundance of non-renewable energy sources, such as nuclear fuels, these energy sources are depleting. In addition to being a non-renewable supply, the non-renewable energy sources release emissions into the air, which has an adverse effect on the environment
