Art brings us closer together

American artists, Vicky Gooch and Mary Frankel recently traveled to visit the Ethnic Minorities of Southwest China.  Traveling through the lush jagged countryside, they discovered the rich bounty of cultural diversity amid the colorful and picturesque villages which dot this region. Centuries of isolation in rugged, impassable terrain have preserved the traditions of these ancient peoples.  As visitors, the artists were welcomed and treated to a visual and cultural feast.  Thus began the inspiration to share these impressions through their artwork.

Vicky Gooch was invited to speak about “China Minorities-American Perceptions” at the US-China Peoples Friendship Association’s Chinese New Year Dinner where she met Consul Wang, the Consul for Cultural Affairs for the Chinese Consulate in Houston. He explained that he lived in the area of the Short Skirt Miao people who are represented in Vicky’s painting “Tea For You”.   The traditional costume reminded him of those days and he wondered, “Is she a real person?”.  “Absolutely!” Vicky replied, “a real person of today.  We found her later outside on her cell phone!”

Art touches each one of us

Each artist brings a unique style to the show, and as artist Mary Frankel points out, “While Vicky and I have different styles of painting; we each share a desire to have our viewers feel connected to humanity through an image we have created.  We feel so lucky to live in an age that makes so many interesting experiences available to us.”  Each artist has selected subjects that caught their attention while traveling.  Using photographs and memories from their travels, they have created a collection of oil paintings to show us people and places far removed from our American lives.  These paintings remind us of the ways that cultural awareness through art enriches each of our lives.
