A Marriage of Man and Machine: Brahms Mount Keeps Maine’s Textile Traditions Alive

When David Kaufman bought Brahms Mount from owners Claudia Brahms and Noel Mount in 2009 he had one mission in mind: “Don’t screw it up.” Mission completed. Now with a rapidly growing business, Kaufman and Brahms Mount’s dedicated team maintain a balance between growing production numbers and maintaining traditional Maine textile manufacturing by:

-     Operating six vintage shuttle looms that date back to the 1940s (They own eight altogether)

-     Teaching their intricate weaving process to a new generation of employees to ensure more high quality products

-     Maintaining a largely human process that requires “all those hands on the product” that automation cannot replicate
