ROMA, Italy - Dec. 3, 2014 - PRLog -- Eni has been awarded the annual “Readers’ Choice‘ prize by the magazine HPCwire – the main source of news and information about the world’s fastest computers and the people who se them – at the 2014 “HPCwire Readers’ and Editors’ Choice Awards‘ held in New Orleans, Louisiana.

“It is a real honour to be awarded this prize by the readers of such a prestigious magazine. Research and technological innovation are at the heart of Eni’s strategy for sustainable growth and underpin the company’s position as a leader in the international market. In this context, Eni has adopted the most avant-garde computing technology in synergy with the state-of-the-art, proprietary algorithms that accelerate simulation progress in geophysical and reservoir exploration and have played a key role in recent upstream successes,‘ declared Eni chief executive, Claudio Descalzi.

AWARD: The Readers’ Choice award is a recognition by the readers, who select and then vote for nominations, of the most effective use of HPC technologies. Eni was selected for the oil and gas sector, for having “implemented the fastest supercomputers in the oil industry, including IBM servers and GPU NVIDIA accelerators‘.

The “Readers’ Choice‘ and “Editors’Choice‘ prizes are a prestigious recognition by the HPC community. The winners area announced every year at the opening of the International Conference for High Performance Computing, Networking, Storage and Analysis in New Orleans.

Since its was founded, in 1986, HPCwire has published a vast range of news articles and high-level articles that make this magazine the primary source of information for professionals in the scientific, technological and commercial sectors interested in high performance and high volume IT systems.

ENI’S HPC SUPERCOMPUTER: Eni has installed a second important High Performance Computing system.

The new HPC is designed to support the company’s core business, enabling a faster and more accurate elaboration of subsoil data. The strategy of Eni is focused on using the most modern technology to support exploration and reservoir simulations.

Using proprietary code developed by the company’s own internal research staff, combined with the most recent parallel programming tools, Eni can now obtain –five times faster than with traditional supercomputers – the seismic date, high-definition 3D images of the subsoil, as well as high value data used to reduce the risks associated with exploration activities.

With regards to dynamic reservoir simulation, as well as being faster, the new system provides more accurate simulations of hydrocarbon reserves that are used to build increasingly detailed models. These two aspects can be crucial in optimising the development of hydrocarbon reservoirs and time-to-market.
