UN Plaza, New York City
UN Plaza, New York City
NEW YORK - Dec. 1, 2014 - PRLog -- From December 10 to 12, 2014 the International Conference on Human Rights, Peace & Development will hold at the United Nations Plaza, New York, USA.  This program is designed to empower individuals and organizations in the advocacy for the protection of human rights.  It shall be held in celebration of Human Rights Day, which is on December 10.  It is organized by Africa to America Productions LLC in collaboration with the Universal Peace Federation Nigeria Chapter.  The theme of this year’s event is: The Right of Peoples to Peace.

Human Rights and the United Nations
The provisions of the United Nations Charter provided a basis for the development of international human rights protection.  The preamble of the charter provides that the members “reaffirm faith in fundamental human rights, in the equal rights of men and women” and Article 1(3) of the United Nations charter states that one of the purposes of the UN is: “to achieve international cooperation in solving international problems of an economic, social, cultural, or humanitarian character, and in promoting and encouraging respect for human rights and for fundamental freedoms for all without distinction as to race, sex, language or religion”.

Human rights are “commonly understood as inalienable fundamental rights to which a person is inherently entitled simply because she or he is a human being.”  The situation of human rights in Africa is generally reported to be poor, and it is seen as an area of grave concern to governmental and non-governmental observers.  Many nations have at least nominally recognized basic human rights for all citizens, though in practice these are not always recognized.  Extensive human rights abuses still occur in several parts of Africa, often under the oversight of the state.  An overview of the state of affairs and considerations towards practical implementations for development will be the focus of this conference.

Program of Events
a) Workshops: Conference room meetings to generate plans, analyses and designs to support the protection of human rights in Africa.
b) Lectures: Interactive sessions with UN officials on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the UN agenda.
c) Visitation: Guided tour of the United Nations Headquarters.
