Follow on Google News | December Free First Thursday Night at the Montclair Art MuseumExtended gallery hours offer free admission, unique programming, live music, and a full-service bar. This month’s highlights include Newark Boys Chorus performance, holiday trunk show in The Store at MAM, and student exhibition opening.
The December evening’s musical performances will include the Newark Boys Chorus and Silver Fox Songs Quartet. The Newark Boys Chorus will give a special holiday performance at 6 p.m. in MAM’s Leir Hall. The Silver Fox Songs Quartet includes David McDowell (sax), Michael Bardash (keys), Gene Torres (bass), and Chuck Batton (drums) and will feature a collection of jazz and/or soul standards from the 1930s through the 1960s, paying tribute to song stylists from Ella Fitzgerald and Aretha Franklin. They will play throughout the evening in MAM’s galleries. Just in time for the holidays, The Store at MAM will offer four exciting artist trunk shows at the December Free First Thursday Night. Browse handcrafted silver jewelry by Andrea Schettino, fine porcelain ceramics by Cynthia Shevelew, and Himalyan hand-embroidered pillows from the collection of Dr. Jay Sethi. Also discover a wide variety of scarves: from the Parisian company Princesse & Dragon to works by local artist Dan Fenelon and more. December will be the last Free First Thursday Night chance to see From Heart to Hand: African-American Quilts from the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts. Docent tours of the exhibition will be offered at 5:30, 6:30, and 7:30 p.m. The Nubian Heritage Quilters, a quilt guild in Montclair, will also provide quilting demonstrations and hands-on activities in the galleries. The Montclair Art Museum will open a new student exhibition at December’s Free First Thursday Night. The Art Start exhibition is the result of a partnership between MAM and the Montclair Child Development Center (MCDC), which began in the spring of 2013 and serves 500 children ages 3 to 5 years old from MCDC’s sites in Montclair, Glen Ridge, and Orange. Inspired by activities highlighting From Heart to Hand, the students created their own vibrant quilt squares. Don’t forget to also check out the student exhibition highlighting projects made on the MAM Art Truck this summer! The MAM Art Truck is a roving retrofitted ice cream truck bringing art projects and lessons directly to MAM’s community. Create your own art at Free First Thursday Night in the Yard School of Art drop-in Draw Along Workshop. Offered for all ages and abilities, this workshop includes instruction with a professional teaching artist and a free session with a model. This December, there will also be a kid’s holiday themed workshop. The MAM Family Learning Lab will also be open that evening with self-directed art activities that explore the current exhibitions. The Free First Thursday Night bar is offered in partnership with Pig & Prince Restaurant & Gastro-Lounge— Free First Thursday Nights run October through June. Please note that the Museum is closed on New Year’s Day and will therefore not have a Free First Thursday Night on January 1. The next Free First Thursday Night will be held February 5.
