Follow on Google News | 55mph Mega Yachts coming to MiamiDesigns look more like ‘marine Maseratis’ than traditional yachts. They are built using aerospace composites with jet-drives which allow much greater speed and fuel efficiency.
“These are not your father’s yachts,” says mega-yacht maven Paul Madden in his office at the world-renowned RMK Merrill-Stevens Shipyard on the Miami River. “Our buyers want new, fresh designs that suit their lifestyles. They want sexy, fast yachts with submarines, helipads, lap pools, gyms, and on-deck cinemas. It’s not about showing off - it’s about the experience and the yachting lifestyle…” Merrill Stevens Yachts’ HQ is in Miami’s largest shipyard that was known for years as home to Malcolm Forbes’ mega-yacht “Highlander” Paul Madden first came to Miami as a film director to helm a teen comedy for Sony Pictures, but then he decided to go into yachting where his first job was running a Sunseeker dealership in Mexico. And it was yachts that brought him to Merrill Stevens for a quick make-over on Henry Ford II’s former 180’ yacht. Madden chartered this yacht to 20th-Century Fox for use as Sebastian Shaw’s (Kevin Bacon) yacht in ‘X-MEN FIRST CLASS’. “This was the only shipyard that could keep up with director Matthew Vaughn’s tight schedule. “I remembered that Miami Vice used to shoot here a lot, and was delighted to become re-acquainted with this famed yard.” Merrill Stevens Yachts now offers over a half-billion dollars worth of yachts. “A yacht is a lot like a film - it is about perfection and fun. It costs what it costs, depending on your idea of perfection, and what ultimately amuses you and your family and friends.” “More mega-yachts are being sold in Miami now than in Monaco” “Our clients are Latinos, Russians and young American ‘uber-wealth’ RMK Merrill-Stevens shipyard is currently servicing a number of Benettis, Feadships and also "Triple 7" a 223' mega-yacht built by the German shipyard group which Paul Madden has represented. "The upper echelon of yachting is, by definition, very exclusive. My clients know I can put them in a new Van Dutch for running around Miami, or a 300-foot Blohm+Voss to cruise the world,” explains Madden. “We offer our clients custom U.S. spec yachts built in Europe and delivered here in Miami with full warranty and service from RMK Merrill-Stevens shipyard.” Clients can sit in the shipyard office and video conference with the designers and builders as they watch their vessel being built in real-time. “You can select the woods, the marbles, and even the monogrammed sheets and towels right here in Miami,” explains Madden. “It has to be enjoyable. If it’s not fun- then why do it?” End
