GARDEN CITY, N.Y. - Nov. 20, 2014 - PRLog -- Adelphi University and the Department of Dance are pleased to present Bella Figura, an iconic work of world-renowned choreographer Jiří Kylián on December 3 through December 6 at 7:30 p.m., with 2:00 p.m. matinee performances on December 6 and 7, at the Performing Arts Center, Adelphi University, Olmsted Theatre (One South Avenue, Garden City, NY).   In addition to Kylián’s work, the program includes new and restaged works by Adelphi faculty members Greg Askins, Frank Augustyn and Catherine Denisot-Lawrence.  It also features a new piece choreographed by Adelphi faculty member Orion Duckstein relating to the stress of constant armed conflict in the modern era which is a tie-in to Adelphi University’s yearlong look at the “Changing Nature of War and Peace.”

Acclaimed choreographer Jiří Kylián is a source of inspiration to many.  For over 30 years, he has been the artistic director and in-house choreographer of Nederlands Dans Theater (NDT), an elite group of dancers who are considered “the most balletic modern dancers in the world” (The Times).  Having created a unique and very personal style over the course of time, Kylián’s choreographies defy academic categorization, blending elements of many sources.  There are always new inspirations to be explored, new challenges and boundaries to be overcome.  Profoundly based on musical reading, there is something in his work deeply penetrating into the mystery of the human persona, unveiling hidden traces through his dance.

Besides creating for NDT, Kylián has made original works for the Stuttgart Ballet, Paris Opera, Swedish Television and the Tokyo Ballet.  He has worked with many creative personalities of international stature, including composers Arne Nordheim (Ariadne 1997) and Toru Takemitsu (Dream Time 1983), as well as designers Atsushi Kitagawara (One of a Kind 1998), Susumu Shingu (Toss of a Dice 2005), and more.  In the course of his career, Kylián has received a number of international awards, including Officer of the Orange Order from the Netherlands, an Honorary Doctorate from The Juilliard School, three Nijinsky Awards (best choreography, company and work), Honorary Medal of the President of the Czech Republic and many others.  For additional information, visit www.jirikylian.com.
