The History of Metal Recycling

Recycling was developed as a way to help the environment as well as for economic reasons.

BAYVILLE, N.J. - Nov. 20, 2014 - PRLog -- In fact, recycling has been in existence of thousands of years. In ancient times, people melted metal including swords, utensils, and pots. These were molded to create new items including coins, ornaments and statues.

When automobiles, structural steel and farming equipment were introduced to the world, it was not long after that people began recycling scrap metal. And this was how scrap yards started.

The idea of landfills was conceived during the 1940s. Although during World War I people already understood the significance of recycling and there were many organized recycling programs in the US and Europe, it was only during and after World War II (in the 40s and 50s) that scrap yards or scrapping depositories became available.

Scrap Yards Today

The history of scrapping metal is not so hard to figure out. There was a need for it during World War I and II and it continues to be a necessity today. Many scrap yards operate on a local level and vehicle owners whose cars are beyond repair would take their vehicle to a scrapping center instead of just abandoning them in the streets or leaving them to rot in their property.

Some scrap yards (like Universal Recycling Group (http://universalrecyclinggroup.com/index.php)) would offer to pick up the vehicle at no extra cost, and there are even those who would pay good money. They will then dismantle the vehicle, remove the scrap metal, melt them and then sell them to interested buyers.

When choosing a scrap yard, always check to see if they follow environmental regulations and they are authorized to operate in your area. Remember that the original purpose of scrapping and recycling was to help the environment, so taking a conscious effort to find an environmentally friendly scrapping service is a must.
