Miller Family YMCA joins the Dec. 2 National #GivingTuesday Movement

NEWBURY PARK, Calif. - Nov. 18, 2014 - PRLog -- The Miller Family YMCA of Newbury Park has joined #GivingTuesday, a national effort to inspire people to take collaborative action to improve their local communities, give back in better, smarter ways to the charities and causes they support and help create a better world.

         Taking place December 2, the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, #GivingTuesday is dedicated to giving, similar to how Black Friday and Cyber Monday have become days that are synonymous with holiday shopping. .

         “Giving Tuesday is such a great way to remind everyone that the spirit of the holiday season should be about community and not just consumerism. The most meaningful gift we can give is the commitment to work together to help build a better world,” says Jessie Bringelson, Miller Y’s youth programs director. “#GivingTuesday celebrates how we can do more with our wallets than just shop--and that we can give as good as we get.”

         The Miller Y is currently collecting canned food to benefit FoodShare, culminating with a donation on December 2. The Y is also collecting monetary donations that will go to help families participate in YMCA swim lessons, personal fitness programs and youth programs.

         “At the Y, we never turn anyone away based on the inability to pay. Your donation to the Miller Family Y can help give a child the gift of water safety or give a senior a support group to get back in shape,” says Bringelson. “We help hundreds of people every year who can’t afford our programs and services and this year, by joining #GivingTuesday and the help of the community, we hope to be able to give back even more.”
