Since 1998, Andrew Barer started The Common Ground Foundation in Weston, CT to assist individuals on isolated Native American Reservations with gaining the educational and social benefits of access to online resources. As an introduction, he has created a 3-day seminar and conference to help inspire individuals to engage in the learning process and be able to apply the skills they need to receive the opportunities provided by the Internet. Mr. Barer helped raise funds for expenses and solicited donations of goods for supplies, and also supervised in the creation of website and marketing materials. He also assisted in running a 3-day workshop for developing leadership skills. Programs have been run on both the Blackfeet and Navajo Reservations. Since 2008, Andrew Barer has been an advisor to The Mycelium School in Asheville, NC CT. The Mycelium School is an international program which provides the next generation of leaders with the knowledge and skills needed for pinpointing and addressing the fundamental causes of environmental and social concerns. This school invites young adult, global citizens 18-30 years old to receive an education that is interdisciplinary, based on ecological principles, social innovation, and localization. Mr. Barer was proud to help the founder with the preliminary school conceptualization, in addition to advising on the school structure, design, and curriculum. Andrew Barer also helped with The Mycelium School’s fundraising and marketing around the communities of New Canaan, Darien, and Greenwich. He also helped recruit staff and faculty for the school. From 2004 to 2010, Andrew Barer was a member of the Easton Learning Foundation in Easton, CT. ELF is an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization committed to cultivating educational excellence for students in the Easton Public Schools. It was founded in 2004 by a group of educators and community volunteers. Andrew Barer helped to refine and implement the mission statement, helped recruit several new board members, led extensive fundraising, as initiatives for community outreach, evaluated and voted on grant proposals, and was the liaison with the public schools and local community organizations such as the PTA. Since 2002, Andrew Barer has been a guest lecturer at Columbia University Business School. Some of his lecture topics include “Management in a ‘start-up’ Whether you are a student or a business executive, mentors are the ideal investment for making improvements that will change the quality of your life.
