Former Vice Presidential Candidate Gives Speech Aboard The USS Russell
"Commander James W. Harney, Jeff, Jamie, Lilybelle, Victoria, Gaby, Sophia, honored family, distinguished guests and crew members of the USS Russell - We are gathered here today on the Flight Deck of the USS Russell to honor Petty Officer First Class Jeffrey Rangel, a man who has dedicated nearly 21 years to keeping our country safe and defending our way of life.
Petty Officer First Class Jeffrey Rangel is a testament to the wonderful qualities of character that a sailor with experience can display. Petty Officer First Class Jeffrey Rangel may be leaving the Navy after a long and honorable career, but he does so filled with and displaying the very best qualities of the United States Navy.
I recently had the privilege to work with Petty Officer First Class Jeffrey Rangel and his Navy veteran wife Jamie reaching out to the community of San Diego. We did a car show, concert event giving back to the people of San Diego. Petty Officer First Class Jeffrey Rangel displayed true patriotism while introducing me to the community, churches, non-profit organizations, businesses and San Diego Chief of Police Shelley Zimmerman.
As we spoke First Class Petty Officer Jeffrey Rangel was reflecting on his journey during which he underwent a transformation from a young person into adulthood. He shared with me that he really had no purpose in life during his first four years in the Navy. After those first four years he realized that he could actually make a career in the Navy. First Class Petty Officer Jeffrey Rangel shared how he met his best friend Jamie in the Navy and how they got married. First Class Petty Officer Jeffrey Rangel also shared how during the war many young sailors were confused and God pressed it on his heart to encourage the young men through the word of God. His crew members gave him the nickname Holly Snickers because of his commitment to the Lord and the compassion he had for his fellow sailors.
He shared a story with me that surprised me, scared me and even inspired me. I had been working on the Hawaiian Islands for many years reaching out to the young people. When I first heard the call from God to reach Hawaii I stepped out by faith. We did not know anyone on any of the Islands. By being faithful to the call our music and our ministry spread across the islands like wild fire. We soon had favor with all the high schools, churches, rehabs, jails, night clubs and with the culture. We stayed consistent working on the islands of Oahu, Maui, The Big Island and Lanai. First Class Petty Officer Jeffrey Rangel came across our music through the high school students while stationed in Hawaii. He researched our music and soon became a fan while studding our style and character. The point that I am making is that while I recently studied the character of Petty Officer First Class Jeffrey Rangel, he had already studied mine over the last ten years without me knowing it. I am very grateful that I made a commitment to God to help the great people of Hawaii including the children of our armed forces that were stationed on the Islands.
Such stories change our perceptions and makes us who we are. In 2012 I was selected by the delegates of the American Independent Party to run for Vice President of the United States of America. I truly believe that it is these stories and these types of partnerships that make us who we are.
Today Petty Officer First Class Jeffrey Rangel can look back upon a career of which he can be immensely proud. It is a career that is filled with noble purpose.
We thank you Petty Officer First Class Jeffrey Rangel and your family for the sacrifices that you have made, for the sleepless nights and for the long watches. We thank you for the devotion to your duty which you have displayed tirelessly for nearly 21 years. We thank you for the dedication you have displayed in your duty in the service of your country. From this day forward you will be a prized and valued attribute and a great credit to your community. You will make a great success of whatever you decide to turn your hand to.
I end with this. Your country salutes you for the service and sacrifice you offered so freely. Your family will no doubt be looking forward to seeing a lot more of you. It is a great privilege and honor to be aboard the USS Russell to pay tribute to you today Sir. Thank you and God bless." Former Vice Presidential Candidate Dr. Robert Ornelas
