AUSTIN, Texas - Nov. 7, 2014 - PRLog -- "UT Press Releases Americans in the Treasure House in Paperback Edition"
Acclaimed new book offers a critical investigation into travel to Mexico before the Revolution.

Austin, USA – November 6, 2014 – The University of Texas Press launched a paperback edition of Jason Ruiz’s Americans in the Treasure House: Travel to Porfirian Mexico and the Cultural Politics of Empire on November 1st, 2014. The title is currently available for purchase directly from the publisher and other retailers.

A paperback edition of Americans in the Treasure House—an engaging archival exploration of traveler's representations of Mexico during the long dictatorship of Porfirio Díaz—joins the hardcover and eBook editions of the title released a year ago to critical acclaim.

"In this accessible and engaging book, Jason Ruiz argues that U.S. travelers and business people and their stories of nineteenth-century Mexico helped shape U.S. perceptions of the 'primitive' economy and people south of the border. Long before there was 'spring break' culture, travelers were producing a racialized, sexualized, gendered account of Mexico for U.S. audiences. Ruiz persuasively argues that we need to understand these ideas about Mexico to understand the Marines' invasion of Veracruz, or to see why U.S. foreign policy treated the Mexican Revolution as such a threat."
