Colorado LED Grow Light Maker Sees Rapid Growth Nationwide

BOULDER, Colo. - Nov. 5, 2014 - PRLog -- Boulder, Colorado—Black Dog Lighting, a Boulder, Colorado designer and builder of LED grow lights for indoor gardeners, recently added a store locator feature to their website to let shoppers find a nearby retailer among its rapidly expanding network of dealers.

According to Wholesale Accounts Manger Patrick Weeks, Black Dog LED more than doubled its retailer base in the past year to nearly 200 outlets and expects to add as many as 300 more in 2015. "Black Dog LED is committed to working with our retail partners such as local hydro shops. These shops provide an amazing and important resource for indoor gardeners, from beginner to advanced,” Weeks says.

According to Weeks, this rapid growth is propelled by the increasing number of states that allow some form of legalized growing of marijuana for either medical or recreational use. This ranges from Colorado and Washington, where growth, sale, and use of marijuana are fully legal to 24 other states where its use is restricted or has been decriminalized. Another three states plus D.C. and Guam have ballot measures this election that range from full legalization in Oregon, Alaska, and the District of Colombia to medical use in Florida and Guam.

But Weeks is quick to point out that LED grow light technology isn’t just for marijuana growers. “Black Dog LED grow lights can be used to grow any type of plant indoors, from common herbs and vegetables to exotic delicacies like star fruit. Phyto-genesis Spectrum™ grow lights developed by BDL Labs combine 15 unique colors of LEDs to provide the most complete growing spectrum of any artificial lighting to help grow plants to their full potential.”

Black Dog LED grow lights have been tested with typical garden crops like lettuce, peppers, tomatoes, and more exotic plants like star fruit, guava, and kenaf, a plant native to Africa related to okra and cotton, whose leaves and shoots are eaten like salad greens with the stalk and stems processed into fibers for products like rope and paper. Herbs and indoor decorative plants also thrive with Black Dog Phyto-genesis Spectrum™ LED grow lights compared to other light sources.

Black Dog LED began developing and manufacturing LED grow lights in 2010 when founder Corey Drew searched for an LED light source with an optimal spectrum that was powerful enough for flowering plants and producing fruit. He knew that LED technology would meet that need while saving tremendously on the energy needed to power other types of lighting. When he learned that no such optimized lights were on the market, he determined to put his 15+ years of botany and horticultural knowledge into designing them. This led to intensive research and development that greatly expanded the understanding of using artificial light for growing plants including many industry firsts like the first true 3-watt LEDs in a single diode.

The benefits of Black Dog LED lighting technology go beyond its ability to precisely target the spectral needs of plants. LED lights use far less power and generate much less wasted energy in the form of heat and unnecessary colors of light than other forms of artificial lighting, making them the most environmentally-friendly and economically efficient source of light. This is being demonstrated in partnerships with several horticultural research and teaching facilities including the Green Technologies program at Brookside Secondary School in Ontario, Canada and the Kane Lab for Ecological and Evolutionary Genomics at the University of Colorado

Weeks sees the greatest growth for Black Dog LED lighting and growing equipment coming from independent hydroponics retailers who comprise over 90% of BDL customers, mostly in states where laws permit legal growing of marijuana. “We are focusing on growth areas in states with either new cannabis-related legislation being implemented or where existing legislation is undergoing changes,” he says. “The store locator helps customers who are looking to buy our lights locally, and with our site traffic we are already seeing retailers benefit from this new tool."
