Chartway Federal Credit Union Unveils Its “Branch of the Future”

Technology Merges with Excellent Service to Create a Better Banking Experience

CHESAPEAKE, Va. - Nov. 6, 2014 - PRLog -- “Where are the Tellers?”

“That’s a question we’ve been hearing a lot lately,” said Jennifer Saunders, of credit union members who have visited Chartway’s sparkling new “Branch of the Future” on Eden Way in Chesapeake.

Saunders, Chartway Federal Credit Union’s director of retail, stands among the familiar trappings of traditional bank offices -- associates ready to help members and several new private banking offices.  But the similarity ends when she points to the standing computer kiosks, a huge 92-inch television monitor and the row of video teller screens that have replaced the traditional teller line.

Welcome to the future of branch banking.

“We believe in the importance of capitalizing on the benefits of an increasingly digital world while still preserving our focus on face-to-face conversation,” said Michael T. Wagner, Chartway’s corporate sales officer. “That’s why we’ve been exploring innovative ways to transform our branch format – to cover both sides of the coin.”

Upon entering the Branch of the Future, each visitor is greeted by a member services associate outfitted with a tablet computer eager to assist them personally with any banking need.  “We’ll guide them in the right direction to handle their own transaction via computer screen or receive assistance from tellers who are securely located behind a sealed space and accessible by way of video,” Wagner said.

To access video tellers, members may simply push the ‘call’ button. The teller then appears on the screen in front of them. After a brief conversation over a telephone handset, the member may conduct their transaction using the familiar plastic containers sent through pneumatic tubes as they would at any financial drive-thru.  The advantage to this more tech savvy way of banking is two-fold: it allows users to bank more efficiently and move on with their day at their own pace, and it provides an additional layer of security for tellers and member transactions.

In addition to the video teller screens, there are “dialogue towers” where transactions are conducted in-person with a representative, and two self-serve computer stations that allow members to check their balances, learn more about the credit union’s rates and products, and to receive hands-on training from team members to help them navigate Chartway’s online banking system.

“Having the computers here gives us the opportunity to help our members take advantage of convenient services they didn’t realize we offer, such as managing their accounts online, paying bills online, and depositing checks from home,” Saunders said. “We are all about saving our members time and money to ultimately build a better banking experience.”

TO CELEBRATE THE OPENING:  Chartway Federal Credit Union will host a “Friday Fun-Fest” on November 7, from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., at the Greenbrier ‘Branch of the Future’ location.  Members, their families and the “curious” are welcome to visit the remodeled facility and enjoy games, music provided by a 93.7 BOB FM radio van, and food from popular food truck vendors The Lucky Peach, Just Cupcakes and more.

CFCU’s CARE team, one of Chartway’s charitable umbrellas that raises money to support worthy community organizations, will also be presenting a $1,000 check to the Chesapeake Police Department at 12:30 p.m.  The $1,000 donation will help purchase bulletproof vests for

CPD’s K-9 unit.  Chief of Police, Kelvin Wright; city treasurer, Barbara Carraway; and several K-9 handlers will all be in attendance.
