Sanitation Crisis at San Jose’s “Jungle” Homeless Encampment

Press Conference and Rally Monday Nov 3, 2014. Residents will speak and candidates for San Jose Mayor and City Council have been invited to answer questions and give their views on the crisis at the “Jungle”.

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Nov. 3, 2014 - PRLog -- The “Jungle” homeless encampment, Story and Senter Road, San Jose. Monday, November 3, 2014 at 11:30 AM.

The City of San Jose, in recognition of the need to improve sanitary conditions at the “Jungle” homeless encampment, has contracted for three porta-potties, but only for 8 hours a day. For the other 16 hours a day the city is asking residents to poop into plastic bags and hold these poop-bags in their camps for up to a week before disposing of them in a costly hazardous waste container.

The press conference will also deal with the city’s plans to close the “Jungle” this December. The city has found 200 rental assistance vouchers for the 300 residents, but they have only been able to find approximately 100 landlords willing and able to accept these vouchers. According its notice, the city has told the residents of the “Jungle” that it is now their responsibility to find a case manager, a voucher, and a vacant apartment.

San Jose’s homeless are asking for:

1)    24-hour porta-potties in encampment areas.

2)    Stop City sweeps of encampments until sanctuary areas are identified on City, County, or church properties, where the homeless can camp or park overnight without fear of persecution, with bathrooms, running water, and showers.

3)    Stop the criminalization and police harassment of homeless people and the ministries and volunteers that serve them.

4)   Identify and secure the funding necessary to end homelessness and the housing crisis in Silicon Valley with the urgency that the problem requires.

This press conference and rally is being organized by H.O.M.E.L.E.S.S., Affordable Housing Network, and CHAM Deliverance Ministry.
