“First, I teach people to set some networking goals and write them down. These will include your reason for networking in the first place. Then, decide on how you want others to view you and for what you want to be remembered, which is part of a personal branding effort,” Sabrina stated. She also counsels her people to test some outfits to see what they feel most comfortable in, and practice what’s known as an elevator pitch. “It’s also a good idea to find a networking buddy, someone to keep you accountable to your goals and that you can practice your approach with.”

Many people who are new to networking find the idea of meeting new people intimidating, but Sabrina has a solution for this. “A great way to start networking is to think of all the people you already know and write their names down. Instant network! After that it becomes a matter of meeting new people, but making a list reminds you that there is a group of people that already know you and like you.”

Once their goals are set and a networking opportunity is identified, Sabrina maps out the networking process in this way. “Pick out two or three people you want to meet, and then introduce yourself. To make networking more enjoyable, focus on meeting new people and learning new things, not just collecting business cards. Be genuine; focus on having a conversation, not on making a contact. Practice active listening. Make them feel like they are the only person in the room. This kind of focus creates space for an honest relationship to form, which is the real point of networking.”

Finally, Sabrina shares a couple of best practices to set her people at ease. “I like to set a goal for myself that helps me think of others and their needs: for example, introducing three people I meet to three people they have never met before. Also, I don’t hand out business cards automatically; I’ll ask for one first, and then let them ask me for mine.”
