American Legion, Department of Colorado Annual Oratorical Scholarship Contest

 
DENVER - Oct. 31, 2014 - PRLog -- Attention Colorado High School Students – The American Legion, Department of Colorado is seeking contestants to participate in their Constitutional Speech Contest, to be held on January 3, 2015, at Arapahoe Community College, in Littleton, Colorado.  Entry is open to Colorado students in grades 9 – 12 who are citizens of or lawful residents of the United States and enrolled in a high school or junior high school (public, parochial, private, military or home school) at the time of the contest.

Scholarships ranging from $500 to $2000 are available to the top five contestants at the State Contest and up to $18,000 for first place at the National Contest.  This year’s State winner will advance to the National Contest, which will be conducted during the month of April 2015, in Indianapolis, Indiana.

In April of this year, Ellen Densmore of Denver, was the winner of 2014 State Contest and came in 3rd place at the National Contest in Indianapolis earning her scholarships totaling more than $18,000 between the State and National Contests.

This nationally recognized Oratorical Contest presents participants with an academic speaking challenge that teaches important leadership qualities, the history of our Nation’s laws, the ability to think and speak clearly and an understanding of the duties, responsibilities, rights and privileges of American citizenship.

The oration must be on the Constitution with emphasis on a citizen’s duties and obligations to our government.  The part of the Constitution your speech is based on is your choice.  Speeches are 8 to 10 minutes long.  Also, a 3 – 5 minute speech on a topic assigned by the Contest Committee is part of the contest.  The assigned topic will be one of four Constitutional Amendments (5, 6, 8 or 19) which will be randomly drawn at the Contest.

There is no cost to enter or participate in this contest.  Applications must be submitted on or before December 1, 2014.  All contestants must be certified by their sponsoring American Legion Post to be accepted for competition at the State Contest.
