Retina Consultants Surgeon Selected as "Volunteer of the Year" for Philanthropic Work

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Oct. 30, 2014 - PRLog -- The Bonita Springs Lions Eye Clinic has selected Dr. Ashish Sharma of Retina Consultants of Southwest Florida as the “Volunteer of the Year” for his philanthropic work providing retina eye exams for uninsured residents with major eye disorders.

Dr. Sharma will receive a special award and recognition at the first Eyeball Soiree to benefit the Bonita Springs Lions Eye Clinic on January 31 at the Wonder Gardens in Bonita Springs.

Dr. Sharma practices at the Fort Myers office of Retina Consultants of Southwest Florida on International Center Boulevard, in addition to their offices in Bonita Springs, Naples, Cape Coral and Port Charlotte.

“I am very pleased to help our neighbors in need.  Vision is such a precious gift and we want to do all we can to help prevent blindness,” said Dr. Sharma.

It is the second time that Dr. Sharma has been honored for providing free eye exams to the needy.  Last year, he was part of a team of volunteer doctors at the Bonita Springs Lions Eye Clinic who received the James W. Clower, Jr., MD Community Service Award presented by the Florida Society of Ophthalmology Foundation.

Retina Consultants of Southwest Florida, founded in 1980, has a long history of helping uninsured and needy residents with major eye problems caused by macular degeneration and other diseases of the retina and vitreous.

The Lions Foundation  for the Blind, Inc., presented the “Life Member” award to Retina Consultants in 2005 on behalf of more than 40 Lions Clubs in South Florida for exams provided to the needy by the entire practice, including Dr. Sharma’s colleagues:  Founder Dr. Joseph P. Walker, Dr. Glenn L. Wing, Dr. Paul A. Raskauskas, Dr. Tom Ghuman, and Dr. Donald C. Fletcher.
