A Dying Wish: Jazz Musician Battles A.L.S. (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis)

Jazz drummer & ALS patient Justin Page with old friends & Jazz greats Kevin Hays, Doug Weiss, Justin Robinson are creating Page's legacy.

NEW YORK - Oct. 29, 2014 - PRLog -- Justin Page is a jazz, R&B/funk drummer & songwriter. At the age of 13, he was the youngest musician ever to perform at the Newport Jazz Festival. Four years later, Justin was named a U.S. Presidential Scholar in the Arts, the first drummer or jazz musician on record.

As an adult, Justin turned his professional focus to computer technology, fighting internet crime. But his love for being a musician did not weaken, nor did his exceptional talent or relationships with his peers who went on to become stars in the music world.

As so many of us do, Justin thought there was plenty of time to work with his colleagues in music and contribute more to his first love. But, unexpectedly, of course, last year, Justin was diagnosed with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.) That same illness for which everyone is taking the water bucket challenge. His is progressing comparatively quickly, so while he is still physically able, Justin must record, and other musicians couldn't agree more, or be any more enthusiastic to be in the band.

That’s where Kickstarter comes in. While being a musician is a modestly paying profession, having a debilitating terminal illness is even less lucrative. But that doesn't make the project any less worthwhile.

Justin Page, jazz pianist Kevin Hays (Hays has appeared on over 60 records as a sideman with Chris Potter, Joshua Redman, Nicholas Payton, Al Foster and others.), bassist Doug Weiss (a member of several important bands on the international jazz scene, including those of drumming greats Bill Stewart and Al Foster). and alto sax player Justin Robinson (currently touring with trumpeter Roy Hargrove) are heading to the studio for a long overdue, but none too soon, collaboration.

Not only will this work be Justin’s last hurrah, and an outstanding contribution to jazz, it will be an inspirational album, bringing hope to ALS sufferers and greater awareness of this devastating disease.
