Veterans Benefit from Tender Touch For All’s Massage Therapy Program

Program Offers Help for Veterans Suffering from Loneliness, Depression, Stress and Anxiety

Oct. 29, 2014 - PRLog -- PORT WASHINGTON, NEW YORK — Many of today’s surviving and returning war veterans are suffering from loneliness, depression, stress and anxiety. Some of them may be isolated from family members, while some others still feel the effects of combat and spend most of their time without their loved ones. As a result, the human touch has become a less frequent part of life for our nation’s former military personnel.

In order to help them improve their health — physically, mentally and emotionally — Tender Touch For All (http://www.tendertouchforall.org/) is providing massage therapy programs for veterans. Its Licensed Massage Therapists specialize in a gentle form of massage that can help alleviate feelings of anxiety and depression in our returning troops. The two main components of massage therapy — companionship and a human touch — can also help heal those who are isolated or lonely and improve their overall emotional and physical well-being, making them feel appreciated for their tremendous sacrifices to our country. Veterans will later see an improvement in their self-esteem.

“Many of our veterans have fallen into less healthy alternatives to coping with the aftermath of war,” said John Schultz, an Iraq War Veteran who served in the United States Marine Corps and Dwyer Project Coordinator, Suffolk County Veterans Service Agency. “Many are not aware of the positive and proven alternatives to managing stress and maintaining wellness that may not be as widely recognized by the traditional provider community. This program has helped bridge that gap.”

“Some veterans have an extremely difficult time readjusting to the stresses of civilian life and that has become even more pronounced, given our current economic climate,” said Marc Silverstein, Executive Director, Tender Touch For All. “Our program can improve their overall outlook and help them assimilate more easily back into society.”

Tender Touch For All offers these programs for seniors at many nursing homes, assisted living facilities and senior citizen centers at no cost to the massage recipient, and veterans as well at facilities such as the Suffolk County Veterans Home in Yaphank, New York, and the Northport Veterans Residence, a homeless shelter on the campus of the Northport VA, and at numerous Wounded Warrior Project events each year.
