Follow on Google News | Skybury Coffee Goes Into FlowerIt is a sea of white as more than 90,000 trees at Skybury’s Coffee Plantation in Mareeba have gone into full flower.
By: Skybury Coffee “It looks a little like snow covered trees, but not only is it very beautiful, the flowers are incredibly fragrant. The native bees just love it,” he said. Small green oblong fruits 1cm long follow and take between eight and nine months to ripen. “These cherries ripen to a red, purple colour and usually contain two seeds, which we will harvest around June next year,” he said. Mr MacLaughlin said ensuring the coffee plants flower synchronously was a mix of science, good luck and weather. “The perfect time for the plants to go into flower is just after the dry season. We control this by a process known as stressing, where we reduce the plant’s water intake even further. “Sometimes the weather can throw us a curveball by raining during the stressing process, which is why the time of year when you do it is incredibly important. “The result of this entire process, are thriving plants with lush green leaves and beautiful flowers that will turn into cherries and at the end our trademark Skybury Coffee that we will export internationally as well as throughout Australia.” For interview requests, please contact Tanya Snelling on 0417 202 663.
