Equity Crowdfunding Now Legal in DC!

New regulations allow DC-based small businesses to raise up to $2 million online.

WASHINGTON - Oct. 27, 2014 - PRLog -- Regulations approved today by the District's Department of Insurance, Securities and Banking allow DC-based businesses to raise money via crowdfunding. Crowdfunding is "open source" financing, a way to raise money online by involving friends, family, customers and supporters in the business financing effort. According to the Department of Securities and Banking, "this type of offering, known as 'intrastate,' is exclusive to District-based businesses and can only be offered and sold to District residents. Intrastate offerings, securities that can only be purchased in the state of issue, are not subject to Securities and Exchange Commission registration but fall within the department’s jurisdiction. In addition, the business entity must be organized under D.C. law to qualify."

Tony Cord, Chairman of the Advisory Board for DC based National Crowdfunding Services states that "this is a watershed event for folks in DC. Think of the John Lennon/Yoko Ono Song ‘Power to the People.’ Now, communities can own a piece of the rock; the dream of equity ownership is now available to virtually everyone. In every sense, this represents a democratization of capital raising."

Mr. Cord and Mr. Cunningham have been actively working to make sure DC residents are fully informed. Their efforts include a July 25, 2014 Video on Equity Crowdfunding: http://youtu.be/HfZuroZG51Y
