OXNARD, Calif. - Oct. 22, 2014 - PRLog -- The Gene Haas Foundation recently awarded the first inaugural Oxnard Youth of the Year Scholarship, totaling $10,000, to Anna Heath, 2014 Youth of the Year nominee by the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Oxnard and Port Hueneme.  This scholarship is made possible as part of a $210,000 grant recently awarded to the club through the Gene Haas Foundation.

The Youth of the Year competition recognizes local youth for outstanding contributions to family, school, community and local Boys & Girls Clubs, as well as overcoming personal challenges and obstacles.  Heath, 18, is an 11-year member of BGCOP and a recent graduate of Pacifica High School in Oxnard. The scholarship will be managed and appropriated by the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Oxnard and Port Hueneme to Heath for tuition, books, room and board and other school-related expenses.

“Anna is an amazing young woman who really pushed herself to succeed,” said Kathy Looman, spokeswoman for the Gene Haas Foundation. “The Foundation looks to reward youth like Anna, who have the potential but not always the means to achieve great things in life. We are also proud to support the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Oxnard and Port Hueneme in its efforts to promote science, technology, engineering and math to the youth of our community.”

The Club will be allocating $150,000 of the recently awarded Gene Haas Foundation grant to expand it highly rated STEM program offerings in science, technology, engineering and math. These expansion plans include more hands-on field trips, and updating their current technology and engineering programs.

The remaining $50,000 will be used by the Club for capital improvement.

“The Gene Haas Foundation has been a strong community partner for many years, and has supported the Club in its efforts in countless ways, contributing to both our programs and capital needs,” said Kelly Ventimiglia, Director of Major Gifts and Annual Giving.

Founded by Haas in 1999, the Gene Haas Foundation has awarded more than 22 million dollars to deserving charities and educational institutions. The Foundation was formed to fund the needs of the local community and to support manufacturing education. It provides scholarship funds to community colleges and vocational schools for students entering technical training programs, especially machinist-based certificate and degree programs as well as supports youth programs that inspire young people to consider manufacturing careers.
