Call for sponsors to support planting 1 million trees in tropics!

BRISTOL, U.K. - Oct. 21, 2014 - PRLog -- AS tropical trees worldwide continue to disappear about 10 times faster than they are replaced, UK social entrepreneur Caroline Nettle is on a mission to plant 1 million trees in tropical areas such as Africa and she needs your help.

Ms Nettle is seeking £500,000 in funding to support her project, which aims to also educate local communities about the value of the forest and provide alternative fuel sources and revenue generating projects for those who border the forests to prevent further loss. The project is already sponsored by Social Media Worldwide, supported by The Barefoot Doctor, Stephen Russell, and also Mass Media Mastery.

The United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) states: “To make up for the world’s loss of trees in the past decade, we need to plant about 14 billion trees every year for 10 years in a row.”
Ms Nettle said there was large demand for timber products with an ever-increasing population worldwide.

“We need lumbar resources to make furniture, boats, housing, for use in farming and many other uses,” she said.
“Until now, forests have been plundered at will in the tropics. The water cycle is also affected by deforestation. Trees extract groundwater through their roots and release it into the atmosphere. When part of a forest is removed, the trees no longer transpire this water, resulting in a much drier climate. Many areas of Africa now have to regulate water due to massive deforestation.”

In the fragile ecosystems such as those in Botswana’s dry land forests, deforestation poses many issues. The forests provide essential products such as wood for fuel, poles, food and medicinal products.

Ms Nettle has had a long-standing love affair with elephants and, as Botswana is home to one-third of the African elephant population, there is a good chance you will see a few if you choose to take a tree planting holiday with her.
The Billion Tree Campaign states that every year, we chop or burn down another 130,000 square kilometres of forest, which means that we lose at least 10 million trees every day.

Ms Nettle is raising awareness about the seriousness of the situation through an iTunes podcast show called Passion for Our Planet and social media campaign.
As Al Gore once said: “Global warming, along with the cutting and burning of forests and other critical habitats, is causing the loss of living species at a level comparable to the extinction event that wiped out the dinosaurs 65 million years ago. That event was believed to have been caused by a giant asteroid. This time, it is not an asteroid colliding with the earth and wreaking havoc, it is us.”
