Give sports facilities a healthy glow with LED lighting

The sports hall at Crosfields School is used for a wide range of activities – from five-a-side football to netball and badminton. The old 400 watt metal halide lighting was unreliable and expensive to run as the lamps were difficult to dim and could not be turned off to save energy due to the 15 minute turn-on time required. The fittings were situated over nine metres above ground level, so replacement was a tricky task – further complicated by the hall’s narrow entrances, which made it impossible to use standard equipment to fit new lamps.

The solution – smart LED lighting

Earlsmann supplied 24 of its Brighton 150 watt LED high bay lights, fitted with 50° reflectors to achieve 500 lux with excellent uniformity. The new lighting instantly cut running costs as it is more efficient and reliable than traditional lighting. While motion sensors were not viable, as the lighting going on and off in one area could cause distraction to users in the other areas, the units do incorporate other smart features to boost energy savings.

The hall receives significant natural lighting through skylights. Daylight harvesting sensors reduce power to the lighting when daylight levels rise above 500 lux. At 9.5m high, the ambient temperature in the hall can reach highs of almost 50°C. At critical temperatures, active thermal feedback reacts by reducing power by up to 10% to protect the LED and driver.

The benefits of better illumination

The new lighting creates a more pleasant, brighter environment for playing sport. Jon Lucas, Crosfields’ Estates Manager reported “much better illumination” levels that help to reduce eye strain. The School is benefiting from significant energy savings, making more money available to spend on education and supporting the community.
