Turn me on, NOW! Rodenhiser Explains How to Prep Your Heating System

HOPKINTON, Mass. - Oct. 20, 2014 - PRLog -- The fall season means many things, football, pumpkin pie, Halloween, and other fall festivities. Just as eagerly as you turn the channel to watch the game, you should be calling to schedule your annual HVAC appointment.

The classic saying, ‘sooner rather than later’, is no joke when preparing your home for the winter cold. Preparing NOW will help homeowners avoid disaster and keep peace of mind. Getting your annual HVAC checked and taking other pre-winter maintenance precautionary measures will help avoid the possible winter calamities.

How to prepare heating system:

Before scheduling for a maintenance check-up one should simply test the heater out by turning it on. This is best done on a warmer fall day (early October) when your heater isn’t necessary. Signs that something could be wrong with your heating system could be noises or odors that are out of the ordinary. In addition, it could be useful to check if the heater is properly warming your home in all the right places.

However, even if all seems well with your heating system, it is still important to call a professional for an annual check-up. A professional will know best and will be able to take all appropriate steps to ensure the function and safety of your heating system. In addition, if they do find any problems with your system it is better to catch these NOW! Many people make the mistake of waiting until their system fails during a frigid night in winter. More likely than not, others will have made the same mistake and companies could be backed up for several weeks before being able to repair yours.

This is also important for your safety. If your heating system is not working properly and beginning to wear itself out, it can pump deadly carbon monoxide into your home without you being aware. Carbon monoxide is a covert killer and for that reason it’s important to take measures as previously mentioned. In addition, one should purchase a carbon monoxide detector.

If you have a service plan, then this could help save money by preventing breakdowns and repairs, or even needing to replace your system all together, which is much more costly. It can also help save money in the long term by being energy efficient.

Other tips to prepare for the winter cold:

Checking pipes for leaks and insulating pipes will help to prevent them from freezing. Insulating warps can be purchased at a low cost.  If your pipes are already insulated, you can check for a leak by looking for dampness or moisture. Exposed pipes can be located in garages, crawl spaces, and attics. Also, when the cold does strike, running a trickle of water could help prevent freezing.

Since alternative heating solutions can be used in the winter, like the use of fireplaces, it is important to make sure your fireplace is venting properly and cleaned. It is also important to have fire extinguishers on hand and to know the proper use of them.

Another important tip is to know where your water main is located. They are often found where the furnace is located or near your water meter. This is important because if an emergency were to occur, it is important to know how to shut off the water so that it can minimize possible damage, which will ultimately save you money.

For people who might be going south for the winter, it is important to remember to shut off your water for the winter.  If there is water left in the system then that has potential to create pipe bursts, so make sure to have the pipes drained. Also, if errant water leaks into your home it could create other problems like mold damage. The past 48 hours of water exposure, your home is at greater risk for microbial growth.

Waiting until the cold weather hits to do these tasks could be a risky choice. Many heating companies will be backed up leaving you waiting for possibly several days for a repaired heating system. It is better to get these tasks done NOW before the temperatures drop!
