‘The Fine School’ – The First Boutique School on The History of Western Art in India

DELHI, India - Oct. 15, 2014 - PRLog -- In a society that tends toward mass production and consumption, there are still those whose primary concern is content and authenticity. Such is the idea of ‘Boutique Schools’. The Fine School provides a creative, multidisciplinary environment for students via its curriculum that includes the western arts, the history of art, and art education. This intensive program consists of 24 classes and it has been designed for people who are serious about developing their interest in works of art and the discipline of Western Art History. The program is open to everyone, including students from the age of 16.

The Fine School takes a close and critical look at the development of the various 'periods', 'movements' and 'isms' by which the history of Western Art is conventionally structured, as well as at the 'alleged' characteristics of the art produced. The Fine School delves deeply into single movements using key objects as a means to understanding the progression of styles and the various thought processes in Western Art.

This program includes paintings, prints, drawings, sculptures, techniques and artistic strategies used to create them affect not only their appearance but also their meanings. Beginning with the rise of the Western Art tradition in ancient Egypt and ending with Conceptual Art in the 60s, the program will trace the evolution of major artistic periods and styles through a close consideration of major artwork and monuments.

Students will learn to develop a critical eye, through videos, slideshows and lectures. The program also includes the development of art in Italy from the time of the Etruscans to Constantine the Great, focusing on the monuments of imperial Rome and on the architecture, sculpture, paintings and mosaics in Italy and throughout the empire, up until the major art movements of late nineteenth-century France.

Focusing on the work of artists like Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, Berthe Morisot, Mary Cassatt, Gustave Caillebotte, Paul Gauguin, Vincent Van Gogh, Paul Cézanne, George Seurat, among others, the lectures will examine the development of an urban Parisian avant-garde, impressionist and expressionist themes of modern life. By the end of the program, participants will be able to view Western art not as a series of isolated moments, but as part of a broad progression. These skills will enable them to discuss objects that one is unfamiliar with in terms of their iconographic importance as well as the cultures that made them.

In combination with a broad general education of the field, Western Art History provides excellent preparation for professions as well as for graduate school in Western Art History and for careers in the arts. This program is meant to be an essential guide to modern and contemporary art, but participants will go down a road that will help create a new framework and model for considering the things that are vital to the progress of civilizations.

This ‘Boutique’ model is unique in its emphasis on relationships moving beyond the standard of teacher to student and extending a focus on individual students. Smaller classes allow teachers to tailor their lessons and styles to meet the needs of individual students. With a low student to teacher ratio, students having difficulty are quickly identified and their particular issues thoroughly addressed. The average class size is twelve pupils.
