Toronto, ON – Thirty-four Latin organizations supporting the settlement and integration of immigrant communities joined forces in a Latin American Civic Participation Campaign to feature a Mayoral panel discussion on October 14th. “We have been working together to implement diverse civic education strategies aiming to increase their understanding of the Canadian political system and participation in the upcoming municipal elections.” Alex Flores, Las Perlas TV 46% of Toronto's total population is composed of first generation immigrants. One-third of them have arrived in Canada in the last 10 years. While newcomers have a wealth of ideas, skills, and experience to offer to Toronto, this potential contribution has yet to be fully realized. It is important that Toronto’s next mayor understands the barriers to inclusion faced by immigrant communities, and has a concrete action plan to tackle these challenges.
