Go Behind Headlines of Major News Oct. 24

BETHPAGE, N.Y. - Oct. 14, 2014 - PRLog -- The Fair Media Council’s Connection Day, presented by Bethpage Federal Credit Union, on Oct. 24, 2014 on Long Island, N.Y. offers the metro region the opportunity to learn about news and current events directly from news professionals.

Keynoting the event, which runs from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Briarcliffe College, Bethpage, N.Y. is Edelman’s Global Strategies and Insight Executive Vice President Steve Rubel. His breakfast address will focus on how native advertising and sponsored content is changing news.

“This event attracts an incredible number of exceptional news and media professionals for one reason: This event is a true public service,” said Fair Media Council CEO Jaci Clement. “Engaging in open dialogue with the public, creating mutual understanding between news and its audience, educating the community on how to pitch the media stories and giving them access to the story tellers and the news decision makers, is what makes this conference unlike any event in the country, and why, after more than two decades, it’s grown in importance and relevance to both the media and the public.”

More than 15 panel discussions tackle hot-button issues in the news, while offering inside stories on how and why the media covers what it does. Politics, online privacy, the crisis in the Middle East and how prepared the United States is to handle Ebola will be explored. Aside from current events, panels also focus on how to work with the media, with the news media giving advice on what they want and need from the public in general and media relations professionals in particular. To round out the conference offerings, social media and branding issues and advice will be offered as well as three separate case studies into the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge: How to create a successful viral campaign, the Ice Bucket Challenge’s impact on the future of fundraising, and the need for transparency and immediate response in today’s media environment.

Speakers represent all aspects of media and include the representation from the following outlets: Associated Press, WABC-TV, CBS New York, NBC New York, FOX5/WNYW, WPIX, WLIW/WNET, 1010WINS, WCBS Newsradio 880, 77 WABC, New York Daily News, New York Post, Long Island Business News, Washington Post, Al Jazeera, FOX News Channel, RNN, FiOS1, WLNY/TV55 and many others. Expert media relations professionals and seasoned communications executives round out the panel discussions to offer the audience advice and to answer questions on best practices for dealing with the media.

This major conference attracts nearly 100 journalists and communication professionals as speakers. About 500 attend, representing all facets of nonprofit organizations, community groups and area businesses.
