GATESHEAD, U.K. - Oct. 10, 2014 - PRLog -- BRITISH Muslim leaders are being urged to openly condemn violent acts carried out in the name of Islam.

And many have already agreed to observe a minute’s silence in memory of murdered British Aid worker Alan Henning and other hostages.

A new campaign – British Muslims Against Isis – urges Imams to speak out during prayers.

Influential Muslims in the North East have pledged their support, including Fazul Rehman the president of the Newcastle-based Al Rehman Welfare Trust and Abu Tayeb, founder of the Islamic Diversity Centre (IDC) North East, also in Newcastle.

Mr Rehman said: “I am calling on Muslims across Britain to observe one minute’s silent prayer next Frriday afternoon to honour the memory of Alan Henning.

“This man was a hero and a martyr and I want to see Muslims everywhere showing solidarity with other British people by demonstrating their opposition to these acts which claim to be in the name of Islam.”

Mr Tayeb, whose charity works with mosques across the North East, organises events and activities to challenge stereotypes about Islam.

Last month IDC released a video – Isis: The Reality – which has already had over 3,000 views on YouTube.

Mr Tayeb said: “We have been opposing ISIS’ ideology since its emergence three years ago, but things have come to the fore recently with these kidnappings and beheadings.

“The Alan Henning murder doesn’t make sense. Of all of the people ISIS has kidnapped and could have killed, his murder is the most surprising and chilling  because he was pro-Muslims and was helping Muslim organisations.

“I certainly support the idea of a minute’s silent prayer in his memory and I think others will too.

“I have spoken to a number of imams recently and they tell me they have been

delivering services condemning ISIS.

“I find that very encouraging, but unfortunately although many have been vocal in their opposition to this group, these messages don’t always get media coverage.”

British Muslims Against Isis was initiated by North East businessman Avi Malik, who said: “I found Alan Henning’s murder extremely upsetting.

“I felt I had to do something to demonstrate to the wider world that this vile act – and others before it – have nothing to do with Islam.

“But it is not enough for me to speak out on my own. What is needed is for Muslims across the North East, and indeed the UK as a whole, to make their voices heard.

“Staying silent is no longer an option – we need to stand up and be counted and be vocal about our condemnation of violent acts that taint our faith and create divisions and within our communities.”
