By: John M Shaughnessy, II Over the last twenty years a person could go just about anywhere in Charlotte, North Carolina where there was music and find Shaughnessy. In addition to playing rock, jazz and blues with his own groups, the Buffalo, New York native is a highly sought after sideman for other duos, trios, bands, orchestras for regional musical theater, and studio sessions. Every musician aspires to set the bar higher for themselves, so using some studio time he had banked, he decided to record an album purely for his own enjoyment. “It may be the last project I do for awhile - songs I had been saving for years that needed a home,” says Shaughnessy. “I recruited Chris Garges and Ron Brendle, two of the best musicians in Charlotte, guys I knew would ‘get it,’ and we recorded this project over two incredibly hot July days. As it turned out, this session proved to be the turning point led to that led to my professional and creative rebirth.” What the listener gets is exactly what came out in those two days with no overdubs or studio wizardry. Shaughnessy said that Chris and Ron had not seen the music beforehand, and most tracks are the first or second take. He adds, “I think this gives the record an extra energy, but I'll let you be the judge.” The CD features Shaughnessy on fretless piccolo bass and bass synthesizer, Brendle on upright bass, and Garges on drums.
