HAUPPAUGE, N.Y. - Oct. 7, 2014 - PRLog -- Few four letter words can grab your attention like L- I- C-E. Particularly Head Lice, and especially if you are a parent. Head lice are tiny insect parasites that live on the scalp. They are about the size of a sesame seed. They lay eggs which attach to the base of the hair and hatch baby lice, called nymphs. Nits are the empty shells left behind, which also need to be removed.

Head lice are most common among pre-school and elementary-age children, and even through middle school. Length of hair is not a factor in attracting lice, but can be a factor in the treatment and eradication. Girls are somewhat more at risk than boys, and they can easily spread to adults as well. Lice find new victims by moving through head-to-head contact and by children sharing personal items such as combs, hats, stuffed animals and so on.

The Big Picture

- In the U.S., the number of infected at any given time is estimated to be between 6 to 12 million (according to pharmaceutical companies) and as high as 21 million (CDC.)

- Forget the embarrassment.  Evidence of lice has been found by archeologists examining early human remains. Lice are not necessarily the result of unsanitary conditions. In fact, lice seem particularly attracted to clean hair.

- Key times to watch out for are, of course, when children go back to school after summer vacation, and school breaks. It also pays to be vigilant when the kids go away to camp or engage in other group activities.

Symptoms

Be on the lookout for itching, particularly behind the ears and upper neck, near the hairline. Because lice are small, and can move quickly, use a magnifying glass in good light to inspect your child’s head.  Part the hair carefully and look from different angles. Sand and dandruff are sometimes mistaken for lice and nits. If you do see the little troublemakers, do not despair. You have a choice of treatment options.
