-- In its annual list of best careers, U.S. News and World Report names Mediator
as one of the top choices. Mediation and other alternative dispute resolution methods are becoming of higher demand as Mediation is quickly becoming a more popular alternative over the court system.
Mediators are trained neutral third parties that help people resolve disputes in a much faster and cheaper way than going to court. Mediators help businesses and family members resolve conflict while preserving the relationship of the party.
Mediation is a unique training opportunity for any professionals seeking a career change or promotion within their current career. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the demand for Mediators is projected to grow by 10% through 2020. Mediators work for the government, law firms, or independently to resolve issues regarding divorce, family, and businesses.
Those who are not seeking a career change may also benefit from training in Mediation. Many studies now say that employers seek employees that have soft-skills. In other words, those that have the character traits and interpersonal skills that create positive relationships with other people are more employable.
The work place has become more dynamic as colleagues work more closely in coordination and development of various projects across different departments. It has evolved an interpersonal dynamic that can’t be ignored. Listening, presenting ideas, resolving conflict, and fostering an open and honest work environment all come down to knowing how to build and maintain relationships with people.
Lakewood College has an online Mediation Certificate program specifically designed to increase skills in active listening, effective communication, impartiality, neutrality, reframing, and the management of conflict-all of which are highly sought soft- skills in the work force.
