By: Community MusicWorks

NEW YORK - Oct. 2, 2014 - PRLog -- On Saturday, October 18 at 7 PM, Community MusicWorks of Providence, RI will perform with violinist Johnny Gandelsman (of Brooklyn Rider and Silk Road Project), along with Venezuelan composer Gonzalo Grau and his nine-piece Guayaba Salsa Band for a genre-bending program.   The concert will feature the New York premiere of Grau’s “Fantasia de Guayaba Habanera,” as well as additional works by Grau.  The evening will be capped with salsa dancing, so bring your dancing shoes!

“Fantasia de Guayaba Habanera,” translated as “Dreaming of guava fruit from Havana” was commissioned by Community MusicWorks for a performance in Providence in 2013, and features traditional Latin rhythms and the electric virtuosic playing of Gandelsman.  The project brings together all elements of the Community MusicWorks mission--music education and performance in the context of an ongoing commitment to bring people from diverse backgrounds into community through musical experiences.   Students perform alongside Community MusicWorks’ resident ensemble, Gandelsman, and Grau and the community is invited to be engaged in the energy of the evening through dancing and singing.

The concert takes place at the DiMenna Center’s Cary Hall, 450 W 37th Street, New York.  Tickets are $100 benefactor, $30 general admission, $10 standing room.

About Community MusicWorks

Founded in 1997, Community MusicWorks is a nationally recognized community-based organization that uses music education and performance as a vehicle to build lasting and meaningful relationships between children, families, and professional musicians in urban neighborhoods of Providence, RI.  CMW has been featured in The New Yorker as a "revolutionary organization in which the distinction between performing and teaching disappears."  Founder and Artistic Director Sebastian Ruth won a MacArthur Fellowship Award in 2010, and the organization was awarded the National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award at the White House that same year.
