ATLANTA - Oct. 1, 2014 - PRLog -- Dr. Michael Randell, a leading gynecological surgeon in Georgia is the first benign (noncancer) gynecologist on the Medical Staff at Northside Hospital - Atlanta to perform a single-site da Vinci Robotic hysterectomy through a single belly button incision.

Single-site robotic surgery offers the traditional benefits of minimally invasive surgery such as shorter recovery time, smaller incisions, and minimal pain, but it also provides the additional benefit of a single incision, so that women have just one, nearly invisible scar.

The FDA approved the specialzed instruments used for single-site gynecologic surgery with the da Vinci robotic last year.  The FDA approved an additional instrument this week.  Dr. Randell is the first benign Gynecologist at Northside Hospital - Atlanta to complete the intensive training required to offer women this advanced surgical option.

"Offering my patients the safest and least invasive surgery has always been my goal," said Dr. Randell.  "Today, with the use of the da Vinci robot and cleverly engineered surgical instruments and devices, women can have surgery performed safely, through just one incision.  This allows for my patients to experience quick healing and less pain."

Each year, an estimated 650,000 women in the U.S. have a hysterectomy becaue of benign gynecologic conditions such as fibroids, endometriosis, and pelvic prolapse.  These conditions can cause chronic pain, heavy bleeding and other debilitating symptoms.

Previously, treatment options included open abdominal or vaginal routes, or laparoscopic with or without robotic assistance. The laparoscopic approaches usually require up to four or more incisions.  With single-site surgery, there is just one small 2.5cm incision made in the belly button.

Dr. Randell, who has performed over 1,000 robotic procedures and more than 2,000 laparoscopic surgeries, is on the cutting edge of minimally invasive surgery.  In 2010, Dr. Randell performed the first single incision laparoscopic surgery at Northside Hospital using only one small incision.  In 2011, Dr. Randell performed the Hospital's first tubal ligation reversal surgery using the daVinci robot resulting in a successful pregnancy and the delivery of a heathy baby.  In 2012, he performed the Hospital's first fibroid removal using the MyoSure XL device from Hologic.

"I am always looking for innovative devices that allow me to do more for my patients through minimally invasive surgery," said Dr. Randell.

Dr. Randell is a leading expert in fibroid surgery and is on the cutting edge of minimally invasive surgery. His websites www.obgynatlanta.com,  www.fibroidsatlanta.com, and www.roboticsurgeryatlanta.com provide detailed information about the services he provides to women.

"Unfortunately, many women are unaware of the newest surgical techniques available to them," said Dr. Randell.  "Minimally invasive surgery is better for patients.  This can be done as an outpatient and patients can return to their normal routine much quicker."

In addition to taking care of his own patients, Dr. Randell is an instructor to other surgeons locally, nationally, and across the world on laparoscopic and robotic surgery.  In 2012 he was invited to speak at the International Congress of Minimally Invasive Gynecology/Urology Symposium. The event featured experts from around the world. Dr. Randell lectured on robotic myomectomy techniques that he has perfected.  Earlier this year he was invited to Poland and performed the Country's first CO2 laser laparosocpic endometriosis surgery.

Dr. Randell recommends that women needing gynecologic surgery should seek out a well trained and experienced laparoscopic or robotic surgeon.  Dr. Randell suggests using internet search engines, hospital referral services, and asking other doctors for recommendations.
