By: Florida Academy

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Sept. 29, 2014 - PRLog -- According to the SW FL Regional Economic Indicator Report released this past week by the FGCU Regional Economic Research Institute, tourist tax revenues for Lee, Charlotte and Collier coastal counties increased 17% year over year for the month of July. Passenger activity for the 3 SW FL airports also grew 8% over the same time period. The Florida Academy is feeling this growth and will host a job fair on October 6th to help local employers in tourism and other industries find employees.

Tourism is one of the largest economic industries in Florida with almost 100 million travelers visiting the Sunshine State this past year. More than 1 million Floridians are employed by the tourism industry, creating a combined annual payroll of $15.4 billion. Just in Lee County alone, tourism employs 1 out of every 5 people, brings in approximately 4.8 million visitors a year and generates approximately $2.8 billion in economic impact. Just this past year, the Tourist Tax collection generated $28.6 million dollars.

The value of tourism to SW FL is clear and The Florida Academy continues to expand their programs to keep up with the growth in our region. Cosmetology, massage, skin care and nail professions have consistently been rated on national “Top 10” lists for finding quality full-time and part-time jobs. This is especially true in SW FL where Florida Academy achieved a 97% placement rate for their students in the 2013 Council on Occupational Education Institutional Annual Report. In addition, Florida Academy graduates achieved 96% completion rate and 92% licensure exam pass rate for those programs that require state mandated exams.

FL Academy graduates work in resort and destination salons and spas, day spas, medical spas, large multi-branch spas, boutique spas, hotels, cruise ships, chiropractic and medical offices, physical therapy and rehabilitation centers, and hospitals. Florida Academy also takes pride in their many graduates that own their own successful businesses in the massage and skin care industry.

As the tourism industry in SW FL continues to grow so does Florida Academy and the employers they serve. To help local partners and students, Florida Academy will host a Career Fair from 11am until 1pm on October 6th at the Florida Academy at 4387 Colonial Blvd. in the Colonial Center in Fort Myers.

The job fair will provide and opportunity for job seekers to evaluate a variety of Southwest FL businesses and for those businesses to meet with prospective employees. There will also be hands on presentations and career advice beginning at noon during the event by Massage Envy, Florida Academy, Hand and Stone and Rodan and Fields.
