25 First Graders at Newark Educators Community Charter School Celebrate International Dot Day

NEWARK, N.J. - Oct. 6, 2014 - PRLog -- Twenty-five First Graders from Newark Educators Community Charter School (NECCS), recently celebrated International Dot Day. During this day of creativity, courage and collaboration, children were encouraged to celebrate in their own unique ways.  After listening to the book, the 1st Graders were inspired to create their own “Dot Art” projects and Make Their Mark!

International Dot Day, a global celebration of creativity, courage and collaboration, began when teacher Terry Shay introduced his classroom to Peter H. Reynolds' book The Dot on September 15, 2009.

The Dot is the story of a caring teacher who dares a doubting student to trust in her own abilities by being brave enough to "make her mark". What begins with a small dot on a piece of paper becomes a breakthrough in confidence and courage, igniting a journey of self-discovery and sharing, which has gone on to inspire countless children and adults around the globe.

"Our DOT-A-TORIUM is not only an exhibit for the classroom and visitors to see when they come in,” said Doris Jenkins, 1st Grade Teacher NECCS.  It is also our students’ way of showing EXCELLENCE through their very own dot creation and it shows the teachers that our students can and in fact did relate to the main character Vashti in the story, DOT."

And each year on International Dot Day—with the help of individuals, teachers, and students—the inspiration continues. What started as a story in the pages of a book is transforming teaching and learning around the world as people of all ages re-discover the power and potential of creativity in all they do.

“Our students learned that even a dot can be made with excellence,” said Voncille Wratee, 1st Grade Teacher, NECCS. Excellence come in all sizes and packages. Through their artwork the students expressed their most excellent dot.”
