Carl Hancock Rux to Speak on October 2, 2014 at CASA-NYC’s Fall Gala

Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) is proud to announce that we will have the honor of hosting Carl Hancock Rux as our Keynote Speaker for CASA’s 9th Annual Fall Gala, to be held on October 2, 2014 at Manhattan’s Avenue Nightclub.

A native New Yorker and globally influential artist, Mr. Rux’s work crosses the disciplines of poetry, theater, music, and literary fiction; his celebrated album Rux Revue was described by ROLLING STONE as “...a tapestry of grooves …(a) unique blend of sharp cynical poetry and rap, fortified by trials of his difficult personal history.”

Mr. Rux, whose deeply moving tales of urban blight, moral struggle and black pride have been informed by his own struggle and eventual triumph out of New York City’s foster care system, will address a crowd of over 250 young professionals who are gathering to celebrate and promote the essential services that CASA provides to the children and youth in New York City’s foster care system.

For 35 years, Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA), a 501(c)(3) child advocacy nonprofit organization, has been training citizen volunteers to advocate on behalf of children and youth in New York City's foster care system, many who enter the system after suffering abuse and neglect.  CASA’s highly trained volunteer advocates work exclusively on behalf of these children, ensuring that they do not spend needless time in foster care, and that they are returned to rehabilitated and loving parents, freed for adoption or prepared to leave foster care and live successfully on their own.  Last year alone, CASA volunteers spent over 22,000 hours assisting over 1,200 children in New York City’s foster system.
