Detroit Rapper Turns City Purple For Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Hip-Hop Activist, Domestic Violence Child Survivor, Mahogany Jones pushes education and awareness in October, benefiting YWCA shelter, Verizon Wireless HopeLine, and HandBags of Hope

DETROIT - Sept. 23, 2014 - PRLog -- Detroit, MI - In honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Detroit-based Inspirational Hip-Hop artist, MAHOGANY JONES, the force behind Denim Day Detroit, is launching a movement to bring awareness and understanding of Domestic Violence to the public. PURE Purpleis a campaign covering social media, local businesses, and two awareness events all designed to educate the public on what we can do to support victims and end violence. The PURE Purple Awareness Campaign starts online October 1st with everyone encouraged to take selfies wearing purple and sharing the message “Picture A World Without Domestic Violence #PUREPurple APureMovement.com.” For each picture posted throughout October, participating businesses will make donations to The YWCA, the largest provider of Domestic Violence services in the U.S.

Additionally, Jones will be hosting two entertaining awareness fundraisers happening October 17th and 18thfor what has been dubbedPure Purple Awareness Weekend.

Friday, October 17th, in partnership with local non-profit, The Yuinon, Mahogany Jones presents The PURE Purple Soiree Masked Partyat Drive Table Tennis Social Club downtown in the Penobscot  building. The Masked Party, benefits HandBags of Hope which provides purses packed with daily essentials for women fleeing violence. It is also an official collection drive for Verizon Wireless HopeLine, which provides safe, working phones to shelters. Guests can donate a used phone or gently used purse for $5 off their tickets. 50% of ticket proceeds go directly to HandBags of Hope. Advanced tickets come with Purple face masks for a symbolic unmasking following performances by Mahogany Jones, and singers LaShaun Phoenix Moore, and Kenny Watson.

Saturday, October 18th brings together The Foundation: Celebrating Women in Hip Hop, POSitive Native Initiative, and The Yuinon, 501 C3 non-profit to host DETROIT PUBLIC PILLOW FIGHT FOR DV AWARENESSco-sponsored by the African and African American Studies Program of U of M Dearborn and the U of M Dearborn Women’s Resource Center.Why a Public Pillow Fight? Because fighting doesn’t belong in the bedroom and conversations about domestic abuse need to come out in the light. This event is a fundraiser for the YWCA Interim House, Detroit’s only Domestic Violence Shelter as well as day 2 of the cell phone drive for HopeLine by Verizon. Everyone is invited to participate and pick up resources for themselves or a friend and join in a Pillow Talk Q&AForum to gain understanding about Domestic Abuse and what we can all do to help. Counselors will be on hand for support. Mahogany Jones will host and perform at the event.

In February, Jones, herself a child survivor of domestic violence, released a CD compilation entitled PURE Vol. 1 celebrating women and addressing issues including domestic abuse with her empowering anthem, NEVER AGAIN that tells her story of witnessing abuse and drawing the line. A music video is set to release in time for October and Jones has promised to donate 100% of the proceeds from downloads of the song during the month October to abuse service providers.
