Dr. Cernyak-Spatz, age 92, wrote her book, a retelling of her experience as a prisoner in a Nazi concentration camp, to ensure that the horrors of the holocaust are passed down to subsequent generations to safeguard the future against similar atrocities. “We don’t teach enough history in our schools, and what happened is in danger of being forgotten,” she explained. “My story represents the history of Europe in the 30s and 40s. In Europe at least, anti-Semitism is on the rise again. Have we already forgotten?” Speaking of Germany, she added, “We do not want to forget how a civilized nation lost its sense of what is right and went down a path of murder and incredible cruelty.”

Dr. Susan Cernyak-Spatz is a Professor Emerita in German literature at UNC-Charlotte. She is 92 years old and continues to teach and lecture about the Holocaust and her experiences as a prisoner in the Nazi concentration camps, specifically the camps at Theresienstadt and Auschwitz-Birkenau.
